Overview

If you missed our live August 2019 Actual Innocence programs: Annual Program: Establishing Innocence or Guilt (August 28-29, 2019) or Habeas Issues (August 30, 2019), you still have a chance to "attend". Some of our speakers’ presentations were recorded and will be available to view online for the month of December!  Register by November 25th to receive access details on December 2nd. Registration closes on November 25, 2019. Late registrations will not be accepted.

Access to these recordings will only be available from December 2-31, 2019. An email will be sent to registrants on December 2, 2019, with a link and password to access the recordings, electronic materials, and CLE and TCOLE information. Note: CLE and TCOLE credit will only be available for those who did not attend the live program(s).

Tuition

These programs were funded by a grant from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Thanks to the grant, the video recordings can be offered tuition-free to most registrants for the month of December.

Tuition-free registration is available for the following constituents:

  • Texas State Judge
  • Texas State Judge’s Staff
  • Texas State Prosecutor
  • Texas State Prosecutor’s Staff
  • Texas criminal defense lawyer who regularly represents indigent defendants in criminal matters in Texas State Courts
  • Paralegals, investigators and/or mitigation experts of a Texas criminal defense lawyers who regularly represents indigent defendants in criminal matters in Texas State Courts
  • Sworn Texas Law Enforcement Officer
  • Texas Law Student

Tuition is required for all other registrants, at the cost of: $50 per program.

Tuition will be used to cover future expenses of CAIL’s Actual Innocence grant programs or to provide for items that the grant cannot sufficiently cover.

This annual program was a forum to consider wrongful convictions and answer the questions: Why do wrongful convictions occur? What can be done to reduce the likelihood of wrongful convictions?

Recorded Program: Habeas Issues, August 30, 2019

This program focused attention on habeas issues, an area of criminal law practice that is not often well understood. By providing a view into habeas law and practice from both the prosecution and defense perspectives, this program is useful for habeas practitioners and their staff, and for trial lawyers and their staff who want to steer clear of post-trial problems.

CLE Credit

Note: CLE credit will only be available for those who did not attend the live program(s).

The State Bar of Texas has approved a total of 7.25 hours, including 1.00 hour of ethics, for the August 28-29, 2019 Annual Program recordings.

The State Bar of Texas has approved a total of 5.75 hours, including 0 hours of ethics, for the August 30, 2019 Habeas Issues recordings.

In addition to Texas, after the program (if requested) CAIL will directly apply for course accreditation in the following states, as long as course materials and evaluations are not required: California, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Attorneys may be eligible to receive CLE credit through attorney self-submission in other states, as long as course materials and evaluations are not required to be submitted.

TCOLE Credit

Note: TCOLE credit will only be available for those who did not attend the live program(s). Law Enforcement personnel viewing the August 28-29, 2019 Annual Program recordings are eligible for 7 hours of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) credit.

Law Enforcement personnel viewing the August 30, 2019 Habeas Issues recordings are eligible for 6 hours of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) credit.
