Overview

The idea of servant-leadership was first posited in the essay The Servant as Leader written by Robert K. Greenleaf, the retired Director of Management Research for the AT&T Corporation, in 1970.

The servant as leader approach “… attempts to simultaneously enhance the personal growth of workers and improve the quality and caring of our many institutions through a combination of teamwork and community, personal involvement in decision-making, and ethical and caring behavior” (Spears, L.).

Servant leadership is a comprehensive and timeless leadership philosophy that is comprised of the following components:

  • Listening;
  • Empathy;
  • Healing;
  • Awareness of ourselves and others;
  • Persuasion;
  • Conceptualization;
  • Foresight;
  • Stewardship;
  • Commitment to the growth of people; and
  • Building Community

This program will explore the varied meanings of “leading” and "following," while emphasizing the role of the manager in creating an environment in which employees can thrive while serving others (both inside and outside their organization).
