Overview

IEL Mini-Conferences are half-day educational programs on more focused topics than more general conferences. Mini-Conferences are designed to allow individuals to attend in a morning or an afternoon, thereby allowing the attendee to avoid missing a full day of work. They also do not feature lunches, which allows tuition to be lower.

4:10 – 4:55 p.m. - Patent Litigation in Oil and Gas and Alternative Energy and its Place in the Broader NPE Litigation Landscape

Oil and gas and alternative energy have been active areas of patenting. The resulting patents represent both an opportunity to their holders and a litigation risk to others. Selected patents from these core technologies have been asserted in litigation by operating companies and non-practicing entities (NPEs) alike. However, oil and gas companies also face litigation risk beyond core technologies, especially as their operations incorporate non-core technologies that have been the subject of serial litigation, such as wireless communications, remote monitoring and control and real-time asset tracking. These sectors have been active areas of litigation, especially from NPE plaintiffs.

This presentation explores patenting in oil and gas and patent litigation both in core and non-core technologies, with a focus on NPEs.

  • Kaylie Naghshpour Everett, Senior Associate, RPX Corporation, San Francisco, California
