Overview

This course will help recruiters, background investigators, hiring managers, supervisors, and administrators understand and apply Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) principles to all facets of the police department. Areas focused on are recruiting, hiring process, promotion, transfers and specialized assignments.

  • How to counteract unconscious bias in the recruiting, hiring, promotion and transfer process
  • Inclusive recruiting strategies
  • Inclusive onboarding and retention strategies
  • Methods for achieving management and specialized unit diversity
  • How to quantify and qualitatively measure DEI goals

Tuition

Tuition includes all instruction and handouts. Lodging and meals are excluded.

Lauretta Hill
Vice President/Chief
USC Department of Public Safety

On January 23, 2023, Lauretta Hill begins her new role as Vice President/Chief of the University of Southern California Department of Public Safety. She previously served the Dallas County Community College District for six years as its first Commissioner of Public Safety and Security. While at DCCCD, she combined seven separate police departments into one police agency. Chief Hill is responsible for managing the district’s public safety operations and initiatives, including campus safety, campus policing, emergency medical response and preparedness. She oversees of approximately 190 sworn and civilian staff. In addition, she is responsible for recruiting, hiring, handling performance evaluations and numerous other duties.

Lauretta Hill’s dedication to law enforcement professionalism spans more than 25 years. The majority of her service was with the Arlington Texas Police Department where she ascended to the rank of Assistant Police Chief. Chief Hill oversaw a staff of 300 employees in the Support Services and Technical Services Divisions. In August of 2014, Chief Hill was appointed to the position of Deputy Chief of Police with Miami Beach Police Department where she oversaw the Operations Support, and Investigations Divisions.

Hill earned a master’s degree from Texas Christian University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. She is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management School, and Cornell University’s program in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Building a Diverse Workforce.

Course Cancellation Policy

Occasionally, the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration (ILEA) may be forced to cancel a scheduled program. Whenever possible, the decision to cancel is made at least fourteen days prior to the start of the program, and registered participants are notified once that decision has been made. If the distance to the training site requires that you make airline and/or hotel reservations, please contact ILEA (+1.972.244.3430) to inquire about the status of any program before making travel arrangements. While paid registrations in cancelled courses will be refunded in full, ILEA will not be responsible for monetary loss due to cancellations or changes in airline or hotel reservations.

Eligibility Policy

The Institute for Law Enforcement Administration provides  professional education and technical support to the law enforcement community. 

A registrant in an ILEA program must be a sworn officer; a civilian employee of a law enforcement department; or an employee of a municipal, county or state agency.

Anyone interested in attending an ILEA program who does not meet the above standard requirements will need to request advance approval. Such requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
