John Rogers Award

The John Rogers Award was established in 1969 by the Center for American and International Law (formerly the Southwestern Legal Foundation) in honor of John Rogers of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The John Rogers Award is presented annually by the Center’s Institute for Energy Law to a person associated with the petroleum industry in recognition of extraordinary professional and civic achievement.

Mr. Rogers, who died in 1977, was a longtime friend and Trustee of The Center. In 1968 he received the Hatton W. Sumners Award from the Center for his outstanding service to the administration of justice and the preservation of a democratic and constitutional form of government.

Of Mr. Rogers, it was aptly written that "he is an attorney and loves the law, but no profession could hold him captive, and his interests have taken him far afield." He was dean of the College of Law at the University of Tulsa, 1948-1956, and special lecturer, 1943-1962. Mr. Rogers served on the Oklahoma Board of Regents for Higher Education and was president of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. In addition to honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Tulsa, Phillips University and John Brown University, he received the Distinguished Service Citation from the University of Oklahoma.

Mr. Rogers was also a president of the International Convention of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) and a member of the General Board of the National Council of Churches. In 1959, he received the National Conference of Christians and Jews Brotherhood Citation.
