New Committee Created for Young Energy Professionals!
The Institute for Energy Law (IEL) values the involvement of its younger members and wants to encourage more to join and participate. The IEL recently created the Young Energy Professionals (YEP) Committee, which has a seat on IEL's Executive Committee. Laney Vazquez, an attorney with BP, is the YEP Committee Chair. Steven Otillar, a Partner with Baker & McKenzie LLP, is Vice Chair. "Young" energy professionals are attorneys, landmen, engineers and other industry participants who are under the age of 40.
The YEP Committee is currently planning programs and events and would appreciate your input. Activities being considered are a general counsel panel discussion and luncheon, happy hours, sporting events, wine-tastings, dinners and a mentoring program. We're also looking to co-host events with other area organizations.
If you're interested in becoming involved with the YEP Committee and IEL, please contact Laney or Steven.
If you are not already a a member of IEL, join today!

Special Rate Offered for Young Energy Professionals
at the 5th Annual Law of LNG Conference
September 4-5, 2008
Hilton Post Oak Hotel - Houston
To encourage participation of young (under 40) energy professionals (a/k/a “YEP”) in the activities of the Institute for Energy Law, the Institute is offering a special tuition rate of $150 to all YEPs at the 5th Law of LNG Conference in Houston on September 4-5 at the Hilton Post Oak Hotel.
Led by conference co-chairs Brian E. Cromer (Senior Corporate Counsel, Sempra Energy, San Diego) and Steven R. Miles (Partner, Baker Botts L.L.P., Washington, DC), an outstanding international faculty will provide a forum on LNG legal issues today.
Registration includes both a networking luncheon and a hosted reception and dinner at the Petroleum Club of Houston. The featured dinner speaker will be Darcel L. Hulse (President and CEO, Sempra LNG). This is a great deal for YEPs interested in the Law of LNG and in getting to know your colleagues in energy law.
To register, please download and complete the registration form at http://www.cailaw.org/Registration_Forms08/5thLNGR.pdf, write “YEP” on the form by your name thereby affirming that you are under 40 years old, and submit your registration by fax, mail or phone (not online) as directed on the form.

HAPPY HOUR (June 2008)
Over 70 YEPs shared drinks, appetizers and conversation at the Flying Saucer in downtown Houston. We racked up a sizable bar tab and had a great time doing it!

Here's what people had to say about it:
"Congrats on a job well done with the happy hour. That was a great turnout, and once again seems to be a good group, and a nice mix of inside and outside counsel. You and the other leaders are really doing a fine job getting it off the ground."
"Thank you for coordinating the networking event last week. Great crowd, good food, convenient venue. Looking forward to the next one!" |

BREAKFAST (February 2008)
at The 59th Annual Oil & Gas Law Conference
To kick off the establishment of the YEP committee, the IEL hosted a Young Energy Professionals Networking Breakfast as part of the 59th Annual Oil and Gas Law Conference in February 2008. Over 60 YEPs attended the successful event (we carded at the door to keep the "seasoned" professionals out), and may YEPs stayed for the rest of the Conference for both the excellent educational sessions and the opportunities to network with the larger IEL membership.
