About ILGS

The Institute for Local Government Legal Studies (ILGS) was created in 1968 as the Municipal Legal Studies Center. Since that time, the practice of local government law has grown in importance and complexity.

The Institute's goal was, and is, to provide programs that help to improve the professional skills of men and women who face the tough legal questions challenging our nation's communities.

With leadership from its Advisory Board, the Institute is in a period of dramatic program growth. The centerpiece of the Institute's programs continues to be the Annual Program on Planning, Zoning and Eminent Domain, one of the pre-eminent land use seminars in the United States.

The Institute is itself a membership center, and the principal benefit of membership is a reduction in program tuition charges. Members may send as many as representatives as they wish to the Annual Program on Planning, Zoning and Eminent Domain at a price that is less than half the regular rate.

Programs

The Planning, Zoning and Eminent Domain Program - Two sessions were held in 2006. One in Plano on November 15-17 and one in San Francisco on December 6-8. These nationally recognized programs are presented in cooperation with the American Bar Association, Section of State and Local Government Law. Plano Co-Chairs were Robert Freilich of Paul Hastings in Los Angeles, Terry Morgan of Terry Morgan & Assoc., Dallas, Texas and Kenneth A. Wright, Dallas, Texas. The co-chairs for the San Francisco program were Dan Curtin of Bingham McCutchen in Walnut Creek, California, Professor Robert Freilich of Paul Hastings in Los Angeles and Kenneth A. Wright, Dallas, TX.

Land Use Law – The Institute for Local Government Studies of The Center for American and International Law, held in Albany, New York, showcased leading planning and zoning law practitioners and experts who outlined important current trends in the law – and who worked with participants on nuts and bolts issues involved in land use law practice.
