9:05 – 9:50 a.m. (Central) - The Global Energy System: Realities, Challenges and Opportunities

This session will offer a primer on the global energy system. We will discuss the various energy carriers and the current state of demand and supply. Then, we will touch on some of the key challenges and opportunities facing different regions around the world. Finally, this session will conclude with scenario outlooks which are useful in navigating the global energy system's ever-changing conditions.

As the world strives to meet ambitious climate goals, hydrogen emerges as a game-changer, offering a sustainable and versatile solution across various industries. This session will analyze the transformative potential of hydrogen in shaping the future of clean energy. The session will explain the different types of hydrogen in relationship to sustainability, the impact of the IRA on the hydrogen market, and other legal issues relating to hydrogen development.

1:00 – 1:45 p.m. (Central) - Critical Minerals: Energy Transition or Energy Security?

A successful transition to renewables or low carbon energy sources requires the extraction and development of numerous minerals and metals. The transition of energy sources can be hampered by the scarcity of these minerals, their location, and opposition to their extraction by activists or local communities.

This session will analyze supply and demand issues related to critical minerals, including looking at their location and perceptions regarding shortages. It will also analyze complexities of the value chain from mining to processing of these minerals. The session will also look at geopolitical issues related to critical minerals, including the opportunities and threats offered by host countries and countries seeking access such minerals. Finally, the session will review major M&A trends related to such minerals.

An increasing number and variety of equity investors are seeking renewable energy investment opportunities. As a result, renewable energy projects are receiving equity investments at much earlier stages than before. This session will explore current equity investment structures, including how traditional structures are evolving to meet today's investment landscape, how tax incentives are influencing equity investments, and what trends we might expect to see in 2024 and beyond.

Texas Course ID Number: 174237873. This course has been approved for Minimum Continuing Legal Education credit by the State Bar of Texas Committee on MCLE in the amount of 5.0 credit hours, of which no credit hours will apply to ethics/professional responsibility credit.

For this conference, IEL will also apply for course accreditation in the following states: California, Louisiana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Some of these states may not approve a program for credit hours before the program occurs.

Attorneys may be eligible to receive CLE credit through reciprocity or attorney self-submission in other states. Attorneys filing by self-submission in certain states may be required to pay an additional fee. IEL conferences are typically accredited by all mandatory CLE states, but more stringent requirements and restrictions are sometimes applied to online programs.
