Overview

Capital defense is the pinnacle of criminal defense work. This intensive four-day program features a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and workshops designed to give capital defense attorneys the practical skills necessary to defend their clients every step of the way, from appointment to plea, and if necessary, to trial. Sessions will address understanding and communicating with clients, advanced voir dire, developing the challenge for cause, and more.

This course is funded by a grant from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

A note from the 2013 Capital Defense College Co-Chairs, Carlos Garcia, Rick Wardroup and John Niland:

What is the Capital Defense College and what happened to CAPTAP???

The name of the program has changed and the focus has broadened: in addition to training to enhance communication skills, this year’s program will provide training regarding how youth factors into representing one accused of a capital crime, and understanding how the emerging brain science affects our clients. This program will also use workshops and demonstrations to supplement and provide near “real world” examples of the issues presented by many of the lecturers.

Who Should Attend?

With the exception of invited faculty, attendance is limited to defense attorneys and those who directly assist them in Criminal Defense Litigation.
