Program Overview

Strengthening Texas Capital Defense: Strategy, Skills, and Case Development is a two-day conference designed for attorneys handling—or seeking to qualify for—appointments in capital cases. The program focuses on practical strategies to strengthen defense practice and expand the pool of qualified counsel in Texas capital litigation.

This intensive training blends lectures and hands-on workshops that provide individualized, case-specific feedback. Participants will gain immediately applicable tools to build stronger defenses, conduct more effective investigations, and develop cohesive case strategies from pre-trial through post-conviction. The conference emphasizes the unique procedural, evidentiary, and cultural demands of capital cases in Texas, helping both experienced practitioners refine their skills and newer attorneys prepare for their first capital appointments.

This course is funded by a grant from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
