The Mark Smith Academy Scholarship Endowment Fund ensures more non-U.S. legal professionals
from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds can benefit from CAIL’s historic legal program,
educating participants about the American justice system and the rule of law.
The Academy, which recently completed its 59th session with 44 participants from 22 countries, provides comprehensive training on the U.S. legal system, the rule of law, and international business law. Since its inception in 1964, the Academy has educated over 3,300 legal professionals from 120 countries, empowering them to advocate for justice and the rule of law in their home nations. Past participants have gone on to serve at the highest level of government, as chief justice of their country’s top court, on UN tribunals, as President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, as leaders of major law firms and corporate legal offices, and as leaders of the legal profession.
"Mark Smith's dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment has left an enduring legacy," said Jay Ray, vice president at CAIL and director of the Southwestern Institute for International and Comparative Law (SWIICL). "This endowment fund ensures that talented individuals from all backgrounds can access the Academy’s transformative opportunities."
The Academy is one of CAIL's keystone programs, essential to its mission of advancing the justice system and promoting the rule of law. Contributions to the Mark Smith Academy Scholarship Endowment Fund will allow more individuals to access the transformative opportunities offered by the Academy and offer various donor recognition opportunities. Founding donors who contribute by December 31 will receive special benefits, including prominent placement on endowment signage and recognition in CAIL’s annual report.
