Overview

Using Microsoft Office as a tool, this two-day program will demonstrate the benefits of technology in crime analysis, investigations and community policing. Utilizing exercises similar to projects faced by crime analysts, participants will use Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel in concert to analyze crime patterns, trends and problems.

Note: In order to receive the most benefit from this learning experience, please bring a laptop loaded with MS Office Professional* (version 2007 or later) with both Microsoft Access and Excel. MS Office 2016  (365) would be preferred).  If a laptop is not available, the student may share with another student or simply observe the techniques being used in class.

Faculty

  • Mark Stallo, Ph.D.

Mark Stallo began his career with the Dallas Police Department in October 1979 and worked in various assignments with DPD, including being responsible for the Crime Analysis team for 16 years. He retired as a Lieutenant in March 2016.

In 1990, he worked with a group of individuals to create the International Association of Crime Analysis (IACA). He was Vice-President of Membership of IACA from 1991-1994 and was President of the organization from 1994 to October 2000. Mark has been involved in a number of projects including technical assistance, teaching, and steering committees. Some include the National Institute of Justice, the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), the SEARCH group, the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC), the FBI National Academy, and the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration.

Mark has consulted for the government of Argentina on developing a crime analysis program for six of the largest provinces. He has also conducted training for the University of Bucharest and the University of the West in Romania. In addition, he has trained crime analysts in Trinidad and Tobago.

He has authored or co-authored a number of articles and an anthology “Crime and Justice in the Lone Star State” and "Contemporary Issues, Applications and Techniques in Crime Analysis." Furthermore, he has authored and co-authored Better Policing with Microsoft Office, 2007, Better Policing with Microsoft Office, Using Microsoft Office to Improve Law Enforcement Operations, and Using Geographic Information Systems in Law Enforcement.

He has a BS in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati, a MS in management and administrative science from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), a MPA from UTD and a PhD in Public Affairs from UTD.

TCOLE Credit

Law enforcement personnel attending this course are eligible for fourteen (14) hours of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) credit.

Course Cancellation Policy

Occasionally, the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration (ILEA) may be forced to cancel a scheduled program. Whenever possible, the decision to cancel is made at least fourteen days prior to the start of the program, and registered participants are notified once that decision has been made. If the distance to the training site requires that you make airline and/or hotel reservations, please contact ILEA (+1.972.244.3430) to inquire about the status of any program before making travel arrangements. While paid registrations in cancelled courses will be refunded in full, ILEA will not be responsible for monetary loss due to cancellations or changes in airline or hotel reservations.

Eligibility Policy

The Institute for Law Enforcement Administration provides  professional education and technical support to the law enforcement community. 

A registrant in an ILEA program must be a sworn officer; a civilian employee of a law enforcement department; or an employee of a municipal, county or state agency.

Anyone interested in attending an ILEA program who does not meet the above standard requirements will need to request advance approval. Such requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
