Civilian Leadership: Level One - Team Building

This course is aimed at current and future leaders, specifically non-sworn personnel. This three-day seminar is the first of three parts in the Civilian Leadership Series. It can be taken independently or in conjunction with the other sessions.
This session focuses on team building enhancing the ability of all employees to motivate, teach and lead each other in a team-oriented manner to achieve maximum performance. Using a combination of dialogue, practical exercises, case study and research, participants will be exposed to a variety of adult learning models and will become stronger, more confident leaders.
- Day 1
Leadership Styles and Communication
Behavioral Analysis using The Presidential Method - (TPM) is based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological type. Through this system, managers, supervisors, and leaders will gain much insight into human nature and what cause’s people behave the way that they do. Additionally, participants will be provided tools for assessing type and skills for facilitating communication, reducing conflict, and building esteem.
- Day 2
Conflict Matters: Power Tools for Effective Conflict Management in the Workplace
This one-day session introduces fundamental elements in theory and practice of negotiation. Participants will explore their own conflict management style and learn approaches for managing conflict. In addition, discover the importance of breaking gender-role stereotypes and becoming assertive speakers.
- Day 3
Introduction to the Leadership Challenge
Participants will have a thorough introduction and discussion of The Five Practices of Leadership and other similar leadership styles.
Ethics and Ethical Decision Making
This instruction will also examine a range of issues affecting the ethical climate in organizations, and strategies for positive movement in that arena. Participants will have an opportunity to learn and utilize several models for ethical decision-making

Who Should Attend
All level employees: new supervisors, veteran supervisors interested in “sharpening their saw,” senior officers, sworn and non-sworn employees.
Daily 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Successful graduates of this course will receive 21 hours of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) credit.

Course Cancellation Policy
Occasionally, the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration (ILEA) may be forced to cancel a scheduled program. Whenever possible, the decision to cancel is made at least fourteen days prior to the start of the program, and registered participants are notified once that decision has been made. If the distance to the training site requires that you make airline and/or hotel reservations, please contact ILEA (+1.972.244.3430) to inquire about the status of any program before making travel arrangements. While paid registrations in cancelled courses will be refunded in full, ILEA will not be responsible for monetary loss due to cancellations or changes in airline or hotel reservations.

A registrant in an ILEA program must be a sworn officer; a civilian employee of a law enforcement department; or an employee of a municipal, county or state agency.
Anyone interested in attending an ILEA program who does not meet the above standard requirements will need to request advance approval. Such requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
