Civilian Leadership: Level Two | Supervision

This course is aimed at current and future leaders, specifically non-sworn personnel. This one-week seminar is the second of three parts in the Civilian Leadership Series. It can be taken independently or in conjunction with the other sessions.
This interactive and experiential program is designed to equip and inspire new supervisors, and reinvigorate senior supervisors, for the challenges of the fast paced and fluid world of law enforcement leadership. This generation of leaders will learn core lessons in communication, both inside and outside their agency to promote trust and confidence.
- Day 1
Supervisor Role Identification and Transition
Role identification and expectations of first line supervisors, along with competencies of excellent supervisors, are covered in this block of instruction. Management, individual and subordinate expectations are all discussed.
Employee Motivation and Counseling
Participants will learn techniques and strategies for counseling with employees and will discuss and understand variables in counseling with employees.
- Day 2
Managing Across Generations
This one-day session will identify the different generations in which employees were raised and the different characteristics specific to that generation; identify the common characteristics of all generations and will learn how to use the six step approach to manage across the different generations.
- Day 3
Participants will be able to define followership and followership styles. They will learn the ten rules of good followership; define dynamic subordinancy and critical transition for followers.
Participants will learn the definition of accountability and discuss types of accountability along with mechanisms of accountability within the law enforcement profession.
- Day 4
Diversity through Ethical Leadership
This block of instruction is designed for leaders at every level of the organization, specifically those interested in implementing policies and practices that promote Ethical Leadership; Diversity, Inclusion and Care. Participants will join a network of professionals who are seeking a deeper examination of these issues in order to uplift and champion moral and humanistic synergy between communities and the law enforcement profession.
- Day 5
Team Leadership Communications
This course will examine the styles of communication exhibited in organizations, specifically in a para-military organization. Consideration will be given to how great teams form and how they communicate to maintain optimal performance. The role of the team leader will be explored to highlight the vital attributes needed in effective leadership. Finally, this course will validate the importance of team building through positive communication and interaction.
Stress Management and Wellness (Yoga)
This session will examine the causes and psychological aspects of stress in the workplace, along with an exploration of management strategies. Topics include the unique characteristics of stress in a law enforcement environment, with particular emphasis upon the role played by law enforcement organizations. In addition, students will explore the benefits of yoga to build resiliency, improve clarity and emotional intelligence.
Tuition includes all instruction and handouts. Lodging and meals are excluded.

Who Should Attend
All level employees: new supervisors, veteran supervisors interested in “sharpening their saw,” senior officers, sworn and non-sworn employees.
Daily 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Successful graduates of this course will receive 35 hours of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) credit.

Course Cancellation Policy
Occasionally, the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration (ILEA) may be forced to cancel a scheduled program. Whenever possible, the decision to cancel is made at least fourteen days prior to the start of the program, and registered participants are notified once that decision has been made. If the distance to the training site requires that you make airline and/or hotel reservations, please contact ILEA (+1.972.244.3430) to inquire about the status of any program before making travel arrangements. While paid registrations in cancelled courses will be refunded in full, ILEA will not be responsible for monetary loss due to cancellations or changes in airline or hotel reservations.

A registrant in an ILEA program must be a sworn officer; a civilian employee of a law enforcement department; or an employee of a municipal, county or state agency.
Anyone interested in attending an ILEA program who does not meet the above standard requirements will need to request advance approval. Such requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
