This course is aimed at current and future leaders, specifically non-sworn personnel. This one-week seminar is the second of three parts in the Civilian Leadership Series. It can be taken independently or in conjunction with the other sessions.

This interactive and experiential program is designed to equip and inspire new supervisors, and reinvigorate senior supervisors, for the challenges of the fast paced and fluid world of law enforcement leadership. This generation of leaders will learn core lessons in communication, both inside and outside their agency to promote trust and confidence.

Daily Topics

Day 1
Supervisor Role Identification and Transition
Role identification and expectations of first line supervisors, along with competencies of excellent supervisors, are covered in this block of instruction. Management, individual and subordinate expectations are all discussed.
Employee Motivation and Counseling
Participants will learn techniques and strategies for counseling employees, including a discussion of the variables involved in human motivation.
Day 2
Honoring Boundaries: Prevention of Sexual Harassment
This course will define, identify, and evaluate evidence of harassment. Participants will understand the organizational liability and supervisory responsibility for failing to prevent harassment from occurring, and will discuss the steps necessary to mitigate those risks.
Working with Difficult People
This session will examine how to supervise and work alongside people demonstrating chronically difficult behaviors. Participants will discuss possible causes and outcomes of difficult behavior, as well as communication strategies to best cope with those behaviors.
Day 3
Teambuilding
This session will equip participants with the tools and strategies needed to drive meaningful employee engagement within their teams, with a focus on fostering trust, building inclusive team cultures, and aligning individual contributions with organizational goals.
Stress and Wellness
In this session, participants will identify different types of stress associated with working in a public safety environment, discuss several stress management and adaptability techniques to better cope with stress, and develop a personal wellness plan to lead to healthier living.
Day 4
Building Relationships through Ethical Leadership
This day of instruction will provide participants with the practical strategies, knowledge, and skills to enhance and effectively manage positive police-community relations. In addition, a range of issues will be examined affecting the ethical climate in organizations and participants will have an opportunity to learn and utilize several models for ethical decision-making as an antidote for ethical difficulty in law enforcement.
Day 5
Leadership Charisma and Body Language
This course will examine how charismatic management and communication is used to build a team of unity, pride, and purpose within any sized workgroup. Leaders with strong convictions, morals, and passions have been able to invigorate team members to accomplish extraordinary feats. People such as George Washington, Cleopatra, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King Jr and Sr, Buddha and others on a much smaller scale did not only have intrinsic abilities, but they also developed skills which led to greater effectiveness in communication and motivation.

TCOLE Credit

Successful graduates of this course will receive 35 hours of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) credit.

Occasionally, the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration (ILEA) may be forced to cancel a scheduled program. Whenever possible, the decision to cancel is made at least fourteen days prior to the start of the program, and registered participants are notified once that decision has been made. If the distance to the training site requires that you make airline and/or hotel reservations, please contact ILEA (+1.972.244.3430) to inquire about the status of any program before making travel arrangements. While paid registrations in cancelled courses will be refunded in full, ILEA will not be responsible for monetary loss due to cancellations or changes in airline or hotel reservations.

Eligibility Policy

The Institute for Law Enforcement Administration provides professional education and technical support to the law enforcement community.

A registrant in an ILEA program must be a sworn officer; a civilian employee of a law enforcement department; or an employee of a municipal, county or state agency.

Anyone interested in attending an ILEA program who does not meet the above standard requirements will need to request advance approval. Such requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
