Overview

Presented by Young ITA, Co-sponsored by Greenberg Traurig, JAMSEqual Representation in Arbitration Pledge and BMA

Join us for an evening of discussion and debate, followed by networking drinks and hors d’oeuvres. The evening is aimed at more junior practitioners but all are welcome to attend. We hope that you will be able to join us for what we are sure will be a very lively and enjoyable evening.

This program will provide an in-depth look at current trends in international arbitration particularly with respect to Latin America.  This program will focus on and compare different approaches taken by Latin American governments with respect to investment disputes, and will further assess which approaches are more desirable and yield better results, whether on a national or global scale—or both.

#YoungITATalks is a series of local events presented around the world, featuring talks, workshops or interviews that cover a wide range of subjects relating to arbitration. The #YoungITATalks series is designed for education, conversation and sharing knowledge and experiences among young practitioners.

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, this event is tuition-free and includes pre-event drinks and canapés. Please register in advance to help us get an accurate headcount.

The Trajectory of International Arbitration in Latin America

A look at various countries in the region, and what they are doing to embrace or distance themselves from investor-State arbitration and ISDS in general. In particular, how are governments’ approaches to entering into or terminating their BITs reflecting their countries appetite towards ISDS, and what other measures can we gather from recent trends and measures in the region.

Arbitration Trends in the America’s:  Who are the Winner and Who are the Losers?

Given the seemingly hardline split among countries as to how they approach ISDS in general, what can we learn? How are the government’s respective actions and measures being regarded by their own constituents and abroad? What about their effects on investment? Are these measures / differing approaches encouraging foreign direct investment or discouraging it? What lessons should we be learning?
