#YoungITATalks: Asia, Oceania & India Second Joint Event

Overview

Presented by Young ITA

The international arbitration world, including the APAC region, has always grappled with the “impossible trinity” of speed, quality and cost. One key way of dealing with this issue is through procedural innovation, such as changes in institutional rules and national legislation, or even the establishment of industry-specific arbitral institutions. Recent developments, whether in the APAC region or beyond, have attempted to strike the right balance between these competing factors.

In our second annual event with Young ITA’s regional chairs for Asia, Oceania and India, we will highlight these developments, and discuss key takeaways from an APAC perspective.

#YoungITATalks is a series of virtual events presented around the world, featuring talks, workshops or interviews that cover a wide range of subjects relating to arbitration. The #YoungITATalks series is designed for education, conversation and sharing knowledge and experiences among young practitioners.

About the Speakers

Dr. Mariel Dimsey, LL.M.
Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre
Secretary-General

Mariel is Secretary-General of Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. She is an international commercial and investment arbitration specialist. Prior to joining the HKIAC, Mariel was a Partner at CMS and Co-Head of the global CMS International Arbitration Group. She has over 15 years’ experience acting as adviser and advocate in numerous international arbitrations. She has extensive experience in both common law and civil law disputes, including disputes involving Chinese parties, and has full professional fluency in German. She also sits regularly as arbitrator and has experience as arbitrator under the HKIAC, ICC, KCAB, and DIS Rules, and in ad hoc disputes. She is on the arbitrator panels of several institutions.

Anne-Marie Dornenburg
Nishimura & Asahi
Young ITA, Asia Chair

Anne-Marie Doernenburg is an associate at Nishimura & Asahi in Tokyo specialising in international arbitration, public international law and cross-border dispute resolution. She represents clients in commercial and investment arbitrations under major arbitration rules, advising both corporations and governments. Anne-Marie is admitted in Germany (Rechtsanwalt) and England & Wales (Solicitor). Brought up in a trilingual environment and fluent in six languages, Anne-Marie is passionate about working with clients and colleagues from all over the world. Before moving to Japan, Anne-Marie was based in Washington, DC, Paris and London while working for Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP as well as in Munich. As Young ITA’s ambassador in Asia, Anne-Marie looks forward to organising interesting projects and events that will encourage dialogue between young arbitration practitioners in both Asia and the West.

Philip Tan
White & Case
Young ITA, Asia Vice-Chair

Philip Tan is an associate in White & Case’s International Arbitration practice. Based in Singapore, Philip has previously worked in the New York and Washington, DC, offices of White & Case. Philip acts as counsel in commercial and investment treaty arbitrations, focusing on energy and construction disputes. He has advised on and represented clients in complex, cross-border arbitrations under various rules, including ICC, SIAC, LCIA, UNCITRAL and ICSID. He also speaks and writes regularly, and is keen on promoting Young ITA’s engagement with the international arbitration community in Singapore and the broader Asia-Pacific region. Philip received his J.D. from Columbia Law School and his L.L.B. from the London School of Economics. He is fluent in Chinese, and is qualified in New York, District of Columbia, Singapore, and England & Wales.

Daniel Allman
Norton Rose Fulbright
Young ITA, Oceania Chair

Daniel Allman is a special counsel at Norton Rose Fulbright in Sydney. Daniel specialises in cross-border dispute resolution and represents clients in international commercial and investment arbitration, as well as complex commercial litigation. He is dual-qualified in Australia and New York. Daniel was previously an associate at Covington & Burling in New York, and has worked as a consultant to a UN agency on business and human rights in Southeast Asia and as a solicitor at another leading firm in Australia and on secondment in China. Daniel received his LL.M. from Columbia University and his LL.B. and B.A. from the University of Melbourne. He served as managing editor of Columbia FDI Perspectives and writes frequently on arbitration, investment, and trade.

Juhi Gupta
Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co
Young ITA, India Chair

Juhi Gupta is a principal associate at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. She is based in New Delhi and is qualified in India. Juhi has diverse international commercial arbitration experience under various arbitral rules. Her arbitration experience also includes domestic arbitration and related court proceedings as well as acting as a tribunal secretary. A graduate of National Law School of India University, Bangalore and a LL.M. graduate from Harvard Law School, she previously completed her training contract from Allen & Overy, London. She is also a certified mediator. Juhi regularly writes on different topics related to arbitration in India and dispute resolution. She is serving as Young ITA's first ambassador in India.
