Join us for an insightful webinar on “Cross-Cultural Perspectives in International Arbitration: Bridging Asia and India” hosted in collaboration with the Asia and India Co-Chairs of Young ITA. This session will feature a panel discussion exploring the cultural and legal nuances that shape arbitration practices across Asia and India. Experts will examine the role of diversity in arbitration panels, the impact of cultural sensitivity in arbitral proceedings and negotiations, and comparative approaches to dispute resolution across jurisdictions. Drawing from global best practices, the discussion will highlight strategies for fostering inclusivity, efficiency, and adaptability in international arbitration. This event will provide valuable insights into navigating cross-cultural complexities and strengthening arbitration as a truly global dispute resolution mechanism.

Speakers

Niranjan Venkatesan KC
Barrister, One Essex

Niranjan is a Barrister at One Essex. Niranjan was named Chambers & Partners Commercial Litigation Junior of the Year 2024 and Legal 500 Junior of the Year 2023. He is regularly instructed as lead or sole advocate, often against silks, in complex commercial litigation and in international arbitration. He also has extensive appellate experience, having appeared seven times in the Supreme Court and on many occasions in the Court of Appeal in cases involving complex and important questions of law.

Before coming to the Bar, Niranjan read and taught law at Oxford, where he was a Vinerian, Eldon and Rhodes Scholar.

Shaneen Parikh
Partner, Head of International Arbitration, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas

Shaneen is a dual qualified solicitor, with over three decades of experience in in complex disputes, often with cross-border issues involved. Shaneen is appointed as Vice Chair to the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR for a three year term, till June 2027. She is appointed on the Council of the Mumbai Centre for International Arbitration (MCIA) and is an ambassador of Asia Pacific Arbitration Group of the International Bar Association (IBA). She was as a Member of the Court of Arbitration of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre from 2018-2022. Shaneen was a Member, the Expert Committee for drafting of the institutional arbitration rules for the proposed International Arbitration Centre for the GIFT International Financial Services Centre, Gujarat, India, which issued its Expert Report in July 2024. Shaneen is ranked for her arbitration practice by Who’s Who Legal, as a “Thought Leader”, Arbitration 2023, 2024, and “Most Highly Regarded (Partner)”, – Arbitration 2020, 2021 & 2022. She has also been ranked The Legal 500 (Dispute Resolution – Arbitration, Lawyer of the Year for India, 2024), and by Chambers & Partners, Asia-Pacific – Dispute Resolution, as a Notable Practitioner in Dispute Resolution by Asia Law, and ALB India (Top Disputes Lawyers), Benchmark Litigation’s Top 100 Women in Litigation (Asia-Pacific), 2024.

Shota Toda
Associate, Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu

Shota Toda is an associate at Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu, where he focuses on international commercial arbitration and complex cross-border dispute resolution. He served as an Assistant Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, where he assisted arbitral tribunals in investor-state arbitration cases and supported the Secretary-General in appointing authority matters. Shota earned a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School and is qualified to practice law as a solicitor in England and Wales, as well as in New York and Japan.

Kiran Sanghera
Deputy Secretary General, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre

Kiran Sanghera is Deputy Secretary-General at HKIAC. Prior to returning to HKIAC, Kiran worked at ACICA as Deputy Secretary-General supporting the Secretary-General and the ACICA Board with a particular focus on business development, bringing with her over a decade of institutional experience.

Alice Wang
Senior Associate, Pinsent Masons; Young ITA Asia Co-Chair

Alice advises disputes arising out of major projects involving disputed technical, delay, disruption and quantum related issues. In particular, she represents parties in arbitration proceedings conducted under the rules of the major arbitral institutions, as well as representing and advising on pre-arbitration dispute resolutions.

Yarui Zhou
Partner, Tahota Law Firm

Ms. Zhou is an Mjur graduate from the University of Oxford. She can speak Mandarin, English and Japanese. Ms. Zhou has worked with top law firms in China for many years before joining Tahota. Ms. Zhou is dual qualified in both PRC and England &Wales. Ms. Zhou focuses her practice area in dispute resolution, especially in cross-border arbitration and litigation. She is specialized in handling various kinds of disputes involving shareholder dispute, equity transfer, investment dispute, international trade, recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards in China. Ms. Zhou has represented domestic and foreign clients in arbitration cases in major international arbitration centers including CIETAC, BAC, HKIAC, SIAC, ICC, SCC. She has advised many domestic and multinational companies such as Asian Development Bank, Daimler AG, Berjaya Group, Aptiv, China Minsheng Investment Group, Sichuan Panzhihua Municipal People's Government, China Huarong and Tianrun Holdings.

Moderators

Aayushi Singh
Juriste (International Arbitration) Paris; Young ITA, India Co-Chair

Aayushi Singh is a dispute resolution practitioner based in New Delhi. Aayushi previously worked as a Visiting Foreign Lawyer at WilmerHale, London. Aayushi's experience includes commercial arbitration under SIAC, ICC and DIAC Rules seated in London, Singapore, Zurich, and New Delhi. She pursued the NUS-MIDS Double Degree Programme between the National University of Singapore, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and University of Geneva. She is a recipient of a full scholarship for her postgraduate studies by the Aga Khan Development Network. She also received a full scholarship to pursue the Austrian Arbitration Academy offered by the Sommerhochschule, University of Vienna. She presently serves as the Young OGEMID Rapporteur for Asia and is a Steering Committee Member of the Indian Women in International Arbitration. She frequently writes on different themes under arbitration in India and Singapore.

Angelia Thng
Partner, Braddell Brothers; Young ITA, Asia Co-Chair

Angelia is a Partner at Braddell Brothers LLP. She specialises in dispute resolution and employment law. Angelia graduated with a LL.B. degree from the National University of Singapore (Law Faculty) and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2015, before being made a Partner of the firm in 2020.

Angelia has a decade of experience in commercial litigation and international arbitration across a broad range of disputes, both domestic and cross-border. She regularly appears at all levels of the Singapore courts, and major arbitral institutes including the SIAC. Angelia is well-versed in navigating complex disputes, and is often commended by clients for providing strategic, practical and effective solutions. She also emerged as a quarter-finalist in the 2017 Essex Court Chambers / Singapore Academy of Law Moot Court Competition for practitioners.
