Join us for an insightful event on “Unlocking the Future of Cost-Effective Arbitration in India” hosted in collaboration with Young ITA and the Jindal Global Law School India Vis Pre-Moot. The session will feature a panel discussion addressing key aspects of arbitration cost management. Experts will examine the current state of third-party funding in India and provide recommendations for building a regulatory system that ensures fairness and transparency while encouraging participation. Drawing insights from international jurisdictions, the discussion will explore how global best practices in cost-saving measures can be adapted to suit the Indian scenario. The panel will also delve into the role of technology, highlighting cutting-edge solutions such as AI-driven case management systems and virtual hearings to reduce costs and enhance procedural efficiency. This event will provide actionable insights into addressing the financial challenges of arbitration and making it a more attractive dispute resolution mechanism for all stakeholders. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of arbitration cost dynamics and contribute to shaping the future of arbitration in India.

Speakers

Nakul Dewan
Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India; Barrister, Twenty Essex

Nakul has a diverse multi-jurisdictional international arbitration and commercial litigation practice, having qualified in England & Wales, Singapore and India. He was designated Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India in 2019, being one of the youngest to have been conferred the designation.

Nakul has extensive experience appearing before courts and international arbitral tribunals in commercial disputes relating to banking and finance, construction and engineering, corporate (joint venture/shareholder/partnership disputes), hospitality, international commercial law (including media and telecommunications), shipping and commodities, mining, energy and natural resources.

Nakul brings a significant level of experience to complex trials, interim applications, injunctions, appellate hearings and jurisdictional disputes. He is also regularly instructed as counsel in setting aside and enforcement proceedings relating to international arbitration awards in England & Wales, Singapore and India.

Varuna Bhanrale
Partner, Trilegal

Varuna is a Partner in the Dispute Resolution practice. She specialises in high-stake commercial disputes.

Varuna’s expertise includes devising strategy in complex cross-border and domestic disputes and implementing it through a blend of pre-litigation/pre-arbitration actions and arbitrations/litigation. She excels in resolving situations involving nuanced issues of law while deftly managing the commercial objectives of her clients.

Jeevan Ballav Panda
Partner, Khaitan and Co.

Jeevan Ballav Panda is a Partner in the Dispute Resolution and Employment, Labour & Benefits practice groups in the NCR office. He brings with him more than 14 years of experience with a focus on commercial litigation, arbitration and employment. Jeevan is also empaneled as an Arbitrator at the Delhi International Arbitration Centre.

Jeevan focuses on handling complex civil and contractual disputes, commercial litigation and arbitration and related pre litigation advisory. Jeevan also regularly argues matters before Courts and arbitral tribunals. Recently, Jeevan has successfully acted for MNCs and PSUs in high stake arbitration and litigation against government entities and private parties and between private players particularly in the railway, construction, infrastructure, power and hospitality sector.

Mrinal Jain
Managing Director, Secretariat, Mumbai

Mrinal Jain is the Managing Director of Secretariat, Mumbai. He specialises in economic damages and valuation. His primary focus is assessing quantum, financial, economic and valuation issues in contentious and non-contentious matters. He is recognized as one of the leading expert witnesses in international arbitration, earning recognition in Who’s Who Legal’s Arbitration 2019, 2020 and 2021 Lists and Thought Leader Arbitration Expert Witness 2021.

Mr. Jain began his career in 2007 at a Big Four accounting firm in New York and brings with him more than 14 years of experience in corporate finance, valuation and quantification of damages, claims or losses, as well as the preparation of independent expert reports and rebuttal reports in dispute cases. Specifically, he has worked on more than 25 matters involving domestic and international arbitrations, bilateral investment treaty (BIT) cases, and litigations.

Aayushi Singh
Moderator, Young ITA, India Co-Chair

Aayushi Singh is a dispute resolution practitioner based in New Delhi. Aayushi previously worked as a Visiting Foreign Lawyer at WilmerHale, London. Aayushi's experience includes commercial arbitration under SIAC, ICC and DIAC Rules seated in London, Singapore, Zurich, and New Delhi. She pursued the NUS-MIDS Double Degree Programme between the National University of Singapore, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and University of Geneva. She is a recipient of a full scholarship for her postgraduate studies by the Aga Khan Development Network. She also received a full scholarship to pursue the Austrian Arbitration Academy offered by the Sommerhochschule, University of Vienna. She presently serves as the Young OGEMID Rapporteur for Asia and is a Steering Committee Member of the Indian Women in International Arbitration. She frequently writes on different themes under arbitration in India and Singapore.

Anjali Chawla
Moderator, Associate Professor & Associate Dean, Jindal Global Law School

Anjali Chawla is an Associate Professor, and Associate Dean at Jindal Global Law School, Sonipat. She also holds the position of Director (Arts Programmes) and the Faculty Director of the Moot Court Society at Jindal Global Law School. Prior to joining Stockholm University for her LL.M, Anjali has worked as a Judicial Clerk in the offices of HMJ G.S. Sistani, Former Judge of Delhi High Court, focusing primarily on international and domestic arbitration, and other commercial disputes.

She has also worked as an Associate in the Chambers of Ms. Suman Bagga, a civil lawyer practicing in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court of India.
