Please join us for a lunchtime discussion and debate, followed by networking. The event is aimed at more junior practitioners but all are welcome to attend. We hope that you will be able to join us for what we are sure will be a very lively and enjoyable programme.

This panel will examine current U.S. investment and trade policies—such as tightened sanctions, inbound/outbound investment screening, and ESG-related regulatory shifts—and how they have reshaped Korea-related investments and supply chains. The discussion will focus on practical dispute risks for Korean businesses, including arbitration and litigation perspectives.

Somin is a foreign attorney at JIPYONG’s Global Dispute Resolution team. She focuses her practice on cross-border litigation and international commercial arbitration, with a particular emphasis on disputes related to foreign investments, antitrust, and TMT (Technology, Media and Telecommunications). She also provides advisory services related to disputes.

After she received a J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law, she worked as an attorney at the City of Chicago and Chicago-based law firms to handle a wide variety of litigation. In particular, she represented businesses and health care providers in litigation. Based on her extensive litigation experience, she regularly advises clients on dispute resolution strategies and solutions.

Somin received B.A. in International Studies and Business Administration. She was an intern at the OECD Business and Industry Advisory Committee in Paris, France.

Arie Eernisse FCIArb is a Senior Foreign Attorney at Peter & Kim, based in Seoul, with over a decade of experience in international arbitration across Asia. He has acted as counsel in more than 50 commercial and investment arbitrations under HKIAC, ICC, KCAB, LCIA, SIAC, UNCITRAL, and other rules, spanning sectors such as construction, energy, insurance, and military procurement. Arie also serves as arbitrator and sits on panels or lists of leading institutions including DIAC, HKIAC, ICDR, JCAA, KCAB, SIAC, and THAC. He co-chairs AMCHAM Korea’s Legal Affairs Committee and is Events Director of ARIAS Asia.

Mevelyn Ong is a Counsel at Sidley Austin LLP. With more than a decade of experience in international arbitration, U.S. sanctions, and U.S. regulatory investigations, Mevelyn has lived and worked in New York, Hong Kong and Melbourne. Mevelyn has represented clients around the world from diverse industry sectors in international commercial and investor-state arbitrations and mediations. Mevelyn has additionally defended multinational companies and financial institutions against multi-jurisdictional regulatory investigations brought by U.S., U.K., and other governmental authorities, with respect to alleged violations of U.S. sanctions, money laundering, bribery, terrorism financing, and other U.S. government regulations. Having spent the majority of her legal career in the U.S., Mevelyn has especial experience advising on matters with a U.S. nexus. She also has particular experience managing international disputes and crises that implicate issues of political risk, transnational criminality, and international law. She sits on a number of international law committees, including with the International Bar Association and the New York City Bar. She holds an LLM from Columbia University (U.S.), Certificate in Global Arbitration Law and Practice from Queen Mary, University of London (U.K.) and BA/LLB (First Class Honours) from the University of Melbourne (Australia).

Eugenia Stavropoulou

Eugenia is a disputes attorney and Ph.D. candidate at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she is a Judge Rosalyn Higgins Scholar. Her research explores harm and loss in international law, ISDS, and cross-border dispute resolution. She has practiced as both counsel and tribunal secretary in Greece, Switzerland, and South Korea, and is admitted to the Athens Bar Association. She holds first-class LL.M. degrees from the University of Athens and from the Geneva Graduate Institute/University of Geneva (MIDS Programme)..
