Dallas County Sheriff’s Department Awards Citizens Certificate of Merit to Gregory Smith

Dallas County Sheriff Marian Brown awarded the Citizens Certificate of Merit to Gregory Smith, vice president of The Center for American and International Law (CAIL) and director of the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration (ILEA) on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

The Citizen’s Certificate of Merit recognizes individuals whose actions of meritorious conduct regarding civic duty, unselfish devotion to their fellow man and community, whose actions bring honor to themselves, or who provide favorable recognition or service to the Sheriff’s Department.

In 2020, Sheriff Brown envisioned a Community Engagement Forum facilitating a meeting between community members and Basic Peace Officer Course cadets in the training academy for open dialogue about the relationship between law enforcement and the citizens they serve. Smith supported the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department as they held their first Community Engagement Forum and led the discussion with community members and Basic Peace Officer classes #138 and #140. Smith prepared presentations for the forum, including videos, news stories, and body camera footage, and led a productive discussion between the citizens and cadets.
