The Institute for Law Enforcement Administration (ILEA) recently wrapped up another successful session of the Texas Sergeant Academy, hosted in Houston for the Texas Medical Center Police Department (TMCPD). TMCPD, responsible for protecting the employees and visitors of the Texas Medical Center, demonstrated its commitment to leadership development by enrolling 20 first-line supervisors in this transformative program.

This two-week course, designed to meet TCOLE requirements for the New Supervisor’s Course (3737), provided 70 hours of interactive training on leadership, conflict resolution, accountability, and legal updates. The participants benefited from expert instruction delivered by three ILEA staff members and four additional instructors, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience tailored to the challenges of modern law enforcement.

Under the visionary leadership of Chief J. Wolter and Commander L. Giddins, TMCPD made a strategic decision to invest in the professional development of its leaders, particularly as the department’s manpower doubled in 2024. This dedication reflects TMCPD’s forward-thinking approach to fostering a culture of integrity, excellence, and preparedness.
A special acknowledgment goes to Sr. Lt. Edward Lovo, whose organizational efforts ensured a seamless experience for all attendees. From securing first-class facilities to coordinating daily meals, Lt. Lovo’s attention to detail and servant-leadership mindset exemplified the principles taught during the academy.

The Texas Sergeant Academy doesn’t just teach leadership—it builds a community of forward-thinking professionals dedicated to making a positive impact. Congratulations to TMCPD’s 20 graduates on completing this milestone.
